What is an expert witness?

An expert witness is someone who is recognized by a court as an authority on a specific topic and whose knowledge and experience of that specific topic is beyond that accessible to a general practitioner.

Rather than testifying on legal matters, expert witnesses assess factual information and undertake independent analysis in order to assist the court with an opinion to aid the Court’s understanding of a specific topic to which a case relates.
